Product Description:
XBOX DVD Movie Playback Kit Module DVD Video

Amazon.com Review:
Got an Xbox? Do you enjoy watching DVDs? Then you need one of these. This DVD playback kit unlocks the DVD functionality of Microsoft's powerful Xbox and helps make the console an even more important addition to your home entertainment deck.

Feeling rather light in hand, this remote features large keys that feel rubbery yet firm. The kit sports some of the basic functions you'd expect from a common controller, including chapter skip, play, pause, and number buttons. There's also handy 32x fast-forward and reverse controls.

Pressing the display button calls up a friendly onscreen menu that allows access to more features, including up to 10x magnification, A-B playback loop (for cueing and viewing favorite scenes repeatedly), and subtitle and audio options. It's worth noting that many lower-cost DVD remotes have access to such features through the press of a button. The fact that this one requires you to use a menu to access such common commands may rankle DVD aficionados, as the menu is a bit slower than using buttons. Still, the menu is quite intuitive and couldn't be much easier to use.

For the remote to work, you'll need to plug the included infrared receiver into an open controller port on the Xbox. Most gamers will never need to unplug the receiver again, as you can plug it into the rarely used fourth port. Interestingly, the receiver works best when the remote is operated almost directly in front of it, and can be a little finicky when signals are sent from the far left or right.

The couch potato crowd won't be thrilled to learn that the remote does not include power or eject buttons. Why such standard features were omitted escapes us, but that is far and away the worst thing we can say about an otherwise decent control. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Though very lightweight, the controller seems sturdily made and the buttons are large and comfy
  • Uses any of the 4 Xbox game controller ports; rarely gets in the way
  • Gives the Xbox cool DVD playback features
  • Onscreen menu is very easy to use
Cons:
  • No power or eject buttons
  • A-B looping, subtitles, and language selects--as well as other features--are only accessible via onscreen menus
  • Cannot use the remote from far to the left or right of the sensor

Amazon.com Product Description:
Enables DVD movie playback functionality on the Xbox video game system. Includes a DVD remote control and an infrared receiver that plugs into an Xbox controller port. Note: this item is required for DVD movie playback on Xbox.

I've owned one of these since soon after I bought my XBOX it is absolutely must have if you intend to view DVDs on it. The buttons are well placed and it makes thing so much easier. I payed a ton more than what it's listed for here when it was new. It is surprisingly good on battery life I don't think I've even replaced the batteries in it since I bought it so guessing that's good. But overall the real reason to own this is to make it easy to watch DVDs on your XBOX.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It's teh Xbawks DVD playuh.
Well, for starters this ain't a game. It's a game console accessory. So the rating setup for this product is rather inaccurate.

But anyway.

There is not a whole lot to be said about this item. It's the Xbox DVD player kit, and to play movies on the original Xbox, you need this device. It contains a receiver, to, you know, receive signals, and a remote to send them. The Xbox shows its age with this setup- can you imagine the PS3, Xbox 360, or Wii demanding you buy a separate kit to watch movies and get away with it? You know, without angry calls, letters, and possibly egged offices? Somehow, back in the LPA- I mean, in the day, Microsoft did. But they were right to change their ways and just have the Xbox 360 be able to play DVD's straight off. Much better idea.

Still, the DVD kit is something any Xbox owner should have. It is an example of the Xbox's age, telling an interesting tale of how Microsoft's presence in the vidya game console market began, and the odd and interesting things they did and considered doing at the time. If you have an Xbox, as an owner of one with a custom green-and-black flames decal kit that still holds on great after all these years, I salute you. Take care of your old Xbox- and if you want to watch movies on it, buy this kit.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Saves alot of time
Without this watching movies is a pain on your Xbox. I waited for a long time before I got one. I dont regret it. Well designed and not just junk plastic. I makes you Xbox work like your DVD player. Without it you are stuck getting to a certain place in the movie and getting it to start on some. You need this for movies.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Well, it works.
Has to have good line of sight to work, just the minimum features. If you're using your XBOX as a media center, this is pretty much your only option and it's a lot better than using the controller.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - quality product
works well, no issues and very easy to use
well worth the $4 i spent... rather that than $20 something for a new dvd player
